Proverbs 6:6-8
"Go to the ant, O sluggard,
and consider her ways, and learn wisdom:
Which, although she hath no guide, nor master, nor captain,
provideth her meat for herself in the summer,
and gathereth her food in the harvest."
WHIT Embertide
Summer is the season of growth, labor, and preparation - a time when the earth is heavy with promise, anticipating the harvest to come before the stillness of winter. For Catholics, this mirrors a deeper spiritual reality: a call to interior cultivation during the liturgical season of the time after Pentecost.
It is no coincidence that June is dedicated to the Sacred Heart of Jesus, a time when we are invited to unite our daily work and hidden sacrifices to His burning love through the Morning Offering. Nor is it by chance that the Church celebrates so many great saints during this season, especially St. Martha, patron of diligent service. Her witness reminds us that holy work flows from a rightly ordered heart, one that seeks first the kingdom, even amid the busyness of life.
Embertides are spent fasting and partially abstaining (voluntary since the new Code of Canon Law) in penance and with the intentions of thanking God for the gifts He gives us in nature and asking Him for the discipline to use them in moderation. The fasts, known as "Jejunia quatuor temporum," or "the fast of the four seasons," are rooted in Old Testament practices of fasting four times a year:
Zacharias 8:19:
Thus saith the Lord of hosts: The fast of the fourth month, and the fast of the fifth, and the fast of the seventh, and the fast of the tenth shall be to the house of Juda, joy, and gladness, and great solemnities: only love ye truth and peace.Contraindications: If you are in doubt, contact iwona@stonetoflesh.org for more info
Physical contraindications to this fast include: neurosis, mental illness, acute infections, debilitated health due to cancer, tuberculosis, overall very poor health.
Spiritual contraindications to this fast are: pride, immoderation in eating and drinking, melancholy, world weariness (Weltschmerz), excessive love of the world, instability.
