Dec. 1 - 24, 2025

For the ancients even more than for us, the succession of night and day regulated life, generating thought on the great problems of life. Modern progress has partly changed the relationship between human life and cosmic time, but its rapid pace has not completely removed the people of today from the rhythms of the solar cycle.
— John Paul II, 2003

As we enter the Nativity Fast, a time of quiet preparation, gentle fasting, and reorientation toward the Light of Christ, we are invited to notice where the inner flame has dimmed under the weight of exhaustion, cynicism, or ineffectiveness. These are not failures, but signals calling us to restore viriditas, the greening vitality of the soul.

“The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light.” (Isaiah 9:2)

Physiologically, burnout disrupts circadian rhythm, hormonal balance, and light–sleep cycles. It’s literally a loss of inner light regulation - melatonin imbalance, cortisol dysregulation, mitochondrial fatigue. Healing begins with restoring the rhythm of light exposure, rest, and nutrient-rich foods aligned with Hildegard’s gentle fasting.

You will follow a gentle, Hildegard-inspired fast with ancient spelt, simple vegetables, warm herbal drinks, and active time in nature, aligning your body with your soul, mind with your heart. Simple but deeply forming practices to bring the Light of the World back to your body, soul and spirit:

  • Morning sunlight exposure to reset cortisol and awaken energy.

  • Evening candle lighting with Vespers/Evening Prayer (including O, Antiphons) or Compline/Night Prayer to attune to divine rhythm.

From Exhaustion to Restored Light

“I’m drained.” - The feeling of being emotionally overextended and physically depleted by one’s work or responsibilities.
It’s the central component of burnout. Signs:

  • Persistent fatigue not relieved by rest

  • Sleep disturbances or insomnia

  • Headaches, muscle tension, lowered immunity (getting colds often)

  • Increased irritability or tearfulness

  • Loss of motivation and emotional capacity to care

  • Feeling “used up” or “at the end of my rope”

Underlying biology:

  • Dysregulation of the HPA axis (cortisol rhythm blunted or inverted)

  • Mitochondrial fatigue due to chronic stress

  • Impaired glucose metabolism and circadian rhythm disruption

Let your body rest from overstimulation. Less caffeine, sugar, and noise. Replace them with rhythm: daylight walks, herbal teas, candlelight Vespers or Compline at the evening, early sleep, and morning prayer facing the sunrise.

From Cynicism to Reignited Hope

“I don’t care anymore.” - A distant, negative, or indifferent attitude toward work, people, or purpose. Signs:

  • Irritability or sarcasm toward colleagues or loved ones

  • Emotional numbing, indifference, or bitterness

  • Loss of empathy (compassion fatigue)

  • Withdrawal from community or spiritual life, apathy

  • Feeling “why bother?” about things once meaningful

Neurobiological patterns:

  • Overactivation of the amygdala (fear/stress center)

  • Reduced prefrontal cortex regulation (less empathy, impulse control)

  • Dopamine depletion leading to loss of reward response

The remedy is warmth and light: lighting candles at Vespers or Compline as ritual that settles the heart and mind, reconnecting with hope, fasting from overthinking, and cultivating gratitude and beauty.

Fasting from scrolling, and comparison can thaw the frozen ground of hope. Choose words and habits that bring warmth and kindness.

From Ineffectiveness to Illuminated Purpose

“Nothing I do matters.” - A decline in one’s sense of competence, purpose, or achievement, crisis in efficacy. Signs:

  • Decline in productivity or creativity

  • Difficulty concentrating or making decisions

  • Low self-esteem, guilt, or self-criticism

  • Loss of purpose or meaning

  • Feeling stuck or trapped

Neurobiological patterns:

  • Reduced dopaminergic drive (motivation, goal orientation)

  • Impaired executive function (prefrontal fatigue)

  • Chronic inflammation affecting cognitive clarity

Fasting from multitasking and over-effort. Focus on one intentional act of service or prayer each day. Let simplicity reveal significance.

In antiquity, the lighting of the oil lamp after sunset brought a note of joy and communion to the home. In lighting the lamp at dusk, the Christian community also prayed with gratitude in their hearts for the gift of spiritual light. This was the so-called “lucernarium” - that is, the ritual lighting of the lamp whose flame is the symbol of Christ, “the Sun that never sets.
— John Paul II, 2003
Indeed, Christians also know that at nightfall God brightens the darkness of night with the radiance of his presence and the light of his teachings. In this regard, we should remember the very ancient lamp-lighting hymn, Fôs Hilarón [Gladsome Light], that is part of the Armenian and Ethiopian Byzantine liturgies: “Joyful light of the Holy Glory of the Father, immortal, heavenly, holy, blessed, O Jesus Christ! Now that we have reached the sunset and gazed upon the light of the evening, let us sing praises to the Father, to the Son and to the Holy Spirit, God. It is right to praise you always and at all times with harmonious voices, O Son of God, you who give life to us: thus, the universe proclaims your glory”. The West also composed many hymns celebrating Christ the Light.
— John Paul II, 2003

It seemed fitting to our Fathers not to receive the gift of light at eventide in silence, but as soon as is appeared they immediately gave thanks with a hymn. Who was the author of this Hymn of Thanksgiving at the lamplighting time we are unable to say. But it is very old and the people are still singing it.
— St. Basil the Great, In the year 375 A.D.

Hildegard’s Fast

St. Hildegard of Bingen, one of the four female Doctors of the Church, lived in the 12th century but her wisdom shines through the ages. Without a doubt, she was one of the biggest influencers of her time (including popes, monasteries, people at large) and the combination of her natural and supernatural gifts, as well as remedies, are perplexing, fascinating, and inspiring people until today. Her holistic approach supplies people living in the modern culture with ageless and tested advice.

O human, look closely at yourself! For you have heaven and earth and everything in between concealed in you.
— Hildegard von Bingen, Causes and Cures 2, 18).
  • Spelt is the best grain for the human body: it is 100% absorbent, has all of the nine building amino acids needed for proper function, anti-carcinogen substances, many vitamins (including A, E, D, B1, B2, B6), and minerals (iron, magnesium, calcium, phosphorus) that other staple foods don’t have.

Its structure has different protein and gluten than wheat and that’s why it is often well tolerated by those who are gluten intolerant. It builds up the immune system, is anti-inflammatory, and anti-allergic, lowers cholesterol, strengthens the neurological system and heart, fights the formulation of new cancer cells, and increases vitality and good mood.

It is highly advisable to eliminate wheat and introduce spelt to all people who suffer from:

    • the weakened immune system, exhaustion

    • cancer and arthritis, including prevention measures

    • in high risk of cardiac arrest or stroke

    • in heart and circulatory diseases

    • lack of calcium absorption and getting seasonal infections

    • allergies

    • blood, kidneys, liver, intestines diseases; gallbladder stones; hemorrhoids, constipation, diarrheas

    • Crohn’s disease, metabolic-based illnesses

    • after taking long-term meds

    • depression, neurosis, mood swings

    • during fasting to cure and rebuild the body’s strength

  • Spelt is hard to modify yet there are attempts to do it. We advise to use only the ancient and purest kinds of spelt that are cultivated today:

    • Schwabenkorn

    • Steiners Roter Tiroler

    • Frankenkorn (Altgold x Rouquin)

    • Oberkulmer Rotkorn

    • Ostro

  • Vegetables:

Fennel, celery (root and stems), beans, beets, carrots, parsnip (the root of parsley), onion, horseradish, pumpkin, and chickpeas

Discouraged: potatoes, bell peppers, tomatoes, cucumbers, cabbages, mushrooms, leek.

    Fruit:

Apples, chestnuts, almonds, cherries, sour cherries, quince, blackberries, red and black currant, raspberries, citruses, pears

    Discouraged: strawberries, peaches, plums

    Mayo, margarine, canned foods.

No smoked or deep fried foods.

.The sun has set and, with the dying day, once again we need to pray. Indeed, since Christ is the true Sun, let us pray while the sun sets and the day fades in this world, imploring that the light shine on us anew; and let us call for the coming of Christ who will bring us the grace of eternal light.
— St. Cyprian, De Oratione Dominica

“I have prepared a lamp for my anointed one; his enemies I will clothe with confusion, but upon him will my sanctification flourish.” - Ps 131
