Spiritual contraindications to this fast are: pride, immoderation in eating and drinking, melancholy, world weariness (Weltschmerz), excessive love of the world, instability. You will be asked to observe and ‘listen’ to your body during each day of this fast.

You might decide to shorten the fast in the middle of it, if you will find indications that your body’s capacity is signaling to move into refeeding days sooner. That’s ok since you will be responding to the intelligence of your body while keeping spiritual focus of the fast intact. We are not aiming at keeping the rules above reason but at connecting with God who heals.

As the golden light of autumn begins to wane, the Church calls us to the ancient rhythm of the Ember Days, three days set apart for fasting, prayer, and thanksgiving for the harvest. In the Benedictine and Hildegard tradition, these days are not a gloomy deprivation, but a joyful pause: a time to cleanse the body, awaken the soul, and attune ourselves once more to the Creator’s order.
Hildegard of Bingen saw fasting not as punishment, but as a way to restore viriditas - the vitality of health, through simple foods, healing herbs, and a heart turned toward God. This autumn, join us as we step into this centuries-old practice, weaving together the wisdom of European monastic medicine and the renewal of metabolic balance.
Embertides are spent fasting and partially abstaining (voluntary since the new Code of Canon Law) in penance and with the intentions of thanking God for the gifts He gives us in nature and asking Him for the discipline to use them in moderation. The fasts, known as "Jejunia quatuor temporum," or "the fast of the four seasons," are rooted in Old Testament practices of fasting four times a year:
